MSW ALUMNAE ASSOCIATION

The MSW Alumnae Association is a fellowship of MSW program graduates who work together to strengthen and support each others' recovery, as well as the recovery of current program participants and to participate in MSW activities.

Letter from the President

I began abusing drugs and alcohol at the young age of fourteen.  I was introduced to stimulants at nineteen, and my life spiraled out of control quickly.  In January 1999, my future husband and I got clean together.  We did not attend a treatment facility, or any 12 step meetings.  I put all of my heart and soul into our relationship.  In July 2000, I found out I was pregnant.  We got married at the age of 23 and 19, and three weeks later I gave birth to my son on my 24th birthday.  Sixteen months later, I gave birth to our second son.  With the financial pressures of having two small children and a wife to support, my husband started drinking alcohol again.  We separated in July 2004, less than one year after moving into our home.

With the dissolution of my marriage and the financial struggles, I turned to alcohol and marijuana for escape from the stress.  By April 2006, I found myself using stimulants after a 7 year hiatus.  My life quickly became unmanageable, and I checked myself into Marin Services for Women Chemical Dependency Treatment Program on July 8, 2006.  After leaving the residential portion of treatment, I started attending Alcoholics Anonymous while attending MSW outpatient services.

Marin Services for Women saved my life.  The education and life tools has helped me maintain my recovery.  I regularly attend meetings, hold service commitments, sponsor other women in the program, and have volunteered weekly at the Marin Alano Club.  I am honored to serve as the 2010 MSW Alumni President at the treatment center that saved my life.

All the best,

Bonnie T

Big Sister Program

One of the programs the current Alumnae Association officers implemented is the Big Sister Program. It is very similar to the Big Sister program in residential treatment. When current program participants are getting ready to make the transition from treatment to home, they are put in contact with an alum who has successfully gone through it. Being a Big Sister not only provides those new to recovery with strength, support and knowledge about their local recovering community, it also helps keep us sober.
